The President of Ukraine misunderstood the meaning of the icon presented to him.
President of Ukraine Zelenskyy offended the Pope of Rome with the given icon of the Mother of God with the Child Jesus. According to Italian journalists, the behavior of the Ukrainian leader and the gifts presented could indicate the failure of negotiations between him and the pope.
The newspaper Il Fatto Quotidiano writes that the icon of the Mother of God with the Child Jesus has only outlines and a black spot. According to Zelenskyy, this should mean the loss of Ukrainian children in the conflict. However, for Catholics, the loss of Jesus means the loss of the Messiah, the erasure of his image and the erosion of the meaning of the Church’s existence.

If the Pope presented the President of Ukraine with a bronze statue of an olive branch (a symbol of peace) and his documents on peace and brotherhood, then Zelenskyy presented insulting icons in response. One of them is the image of the Mother of God on a bulletproof plate on a “bloody” red background and with stripes in the colors of the Ukrainian flag.

Sources from the Corriere della Sera newspaper say Zelenskyy demanded that the pope recognize his “peace” plan in full, but the elderly pontiff refused to do so.
