President Joe Biden is in Japan to attend the G7 summit. At Marine Corps Air Station Iwakuni, he was greeted by American and Japanese military personnel, after which the White House chief traveled to Hiroshima, the hometown of Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida, where the leaders of the two countries they met.
The President is joined by Secretary of State Anthony Blinken and National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan.
During the meeting with Kishida, Biden emphasized that the U.S.-Japan alliance is the cornerstone of peace and prosperity in the region, and reaffirmed U.S. commitment to the doctrine of expanded nuclear deterrence using every the range of abilities.
The two leaders discussed ways to further strengthen defense cooperation based on Japan’s revised strategic concept and increased defense investment.
According to a White House statement following the meeting, Biden and Kishida reaffirmed their determination to continue to support Ukraine as it defends itself against Russia’s brutal and unlawful invasion, and pledged to work closely together to address regional security issues.
Among these issues are North Korea’s missile and nuclear programs and Beijing’s coercive actions against its neighbors that are contrary to international law.
Biden and Kishida stressed their opposition to any attempt to change the status quo by force and reaffirmed their determination to maintain peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait.
U.S. and Japanese leaders discussed cooperation to promote clean and secure energy and build diverse and sustainable supply chains for critical minerals.
The parties promised to expand their cooperation in the development of new technologies, such as quantum computing and semiconductors, through partnerships with companies and universities.
The Japanese Prime Minister cited as an example of successful cooperation the American company Micron, which produces semiconductors in Hiroshima and conducts scientific research in this area.
This is the second meeting of the leaders of the United States and Japan this year. In January, Biden received Kishida at the White House.
