Maharashtra: Tigress gives birth to four cubs in Navegaon Nagzira Tiger Reserve.

Gondia. A tigress has given birth to four cubs at Navegaon Nagzira Tiger Reserve (NNTR) in Maharashtra’s Gondia district. The officials gave this information. They said that apart from this, two more tigresses from Bramhapuri range (Chandrapur district) are expected to be released soon in NNTR.

NNTR field director Jayarame Gowda R said that tigress T-4 was recently seen roaming with her four cubs. He said that this is a good sign, as the number of tigers in the sanctuary will increase further. Another official said that the age of the tiger cubs is estimated to be between four and five months. According to the recently released All India Tiger Estimation Report, NNTR currently has 12 to 17 tigers.

The forest department has brought two more tigresses from Bramhapuri range, which will soon be released in NNTR, the official said.Honorary wildlife warden Sawan Behekar said that four cubs were sighted along with T-4 and two other tigresses in Bramhapuri range. He said that the authorities will have to ensure the safety of the cubs and will also have to constantly monitor the movement of the two new tigresses to be released in the sanctuary. “Man-animal conflict situations and natural hazards can also happen,” Bahekar said. Management needs to make efforts to deal with the man-made threats faced by the tigers. It will also have to be ensured that the tigers stay inside the forest area and do not move out.”
