Wellington. A 7.7-magnitude earthquake struck the remote Pacific on Friday, triggering a tsunami threat near Vanuatu.

The US Geological Survey said the epicenter of the quake near the Loyalty Islands was 37 km below ground. The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center said tidal waves up to one meter (3 feet) high could rise in Vanuatu.

New Zealand’s national emergency management agency said it was assessing the tsunami risk. The center said waves up to a foot high could occur in Fiji, Kiribati, Papua New Guinea, Guam and other Pacific island nations.
