The US Geological Survey said the quake was 10 km deep.
According to the US tsunami warning system, the earthquake was followed by a warning of a possible tsunami in New Caledonia, Fiji and Vanuatu in the Pacific Ocean.
According to AFP, the quake was detected at a depth of 37 kilometers and 333.8 kilometers off Caledonia.
The agency pointed out that the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center had warned of the possibility of a tsunami within a radius of 1,000 kilometers around the epicentre.
“Based on preliminary earthquake data, dangerous tsunamis are likely to occur on coasts 1,000 km from the epicenter,” the center said in a statement, according to AFP.
The center urged residents of threatened coastal areas to exercise caution.
A receptionist in Noumea, the capital of New Caledonia, told AFP that she did not feel any earthquakes.
