India always stands for respect for sovereignty and adherence to international law: PM Modi

New Delhi: Amid China’s military expansion in the South China Sea and East China Sea, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday said India is committed to safeguarding its sovereignty and integrity by promoting peaceful resolution of maritime disputes based on international law. Prime Minister Modi said in an interview to a Japanese newspaper that the G7 and G20 summits are important platforms for global cooperation. Modi has gone to Hiroshima, Japan to attend the G7 summit. He said, ‘As the President of the G20, I will represent the vision and priorities of the ‘Global South’ during the G7 Summit in Hiroshima. It is important to strengthen cooperation between the G7 and G20 to address global challenges such as climate change, supply chain disruptions, economic recovery, energy instability, healthcare, food security and peace and security.

PM Modi said that the Special Strategic and Global Partnership between India and Japan provides a strong foundation for the joint efforts of the two countries and contributes to global cooperation on these issues. Asked about the Prime Minister’s views on Russia’s invasion of Ukraine and India’s stand on India abstaining from voting on UN resolutions and negative reactions to increased oil imports from Russia, Modi said India wanted to avoid disputes. advocates dialogue and diplomacy to resolve and prioritize the well-being of those affected by the rising prices of essential commodities.

The Prime Minister said that ‘India abstained from the UN General Assembly resolutions condemning the aggression, but it is committed to uphold the UN Charter, international law, sovereignty and territorial integrity. India supports a peaceful solution to the Ukraine crisis and stands ready to make a constructive contribution to the United Nations and beyond. On how to deal with the growing tension, so that international law and territorial integrity can be maintained, Modi said, “India stands for sovereignty, peaceful resolution of disputes and adherence to international law.”

He said that India is committed to safeguarding its sovereignty and integrity while promoting peaceful resolution of maritime disputes on the basis of international law. The Prime Minister, when asked about his take on the growing rivalry among major powers and how India would work with them to achieve global peace and stability, said the world is facing challenges due to the COVID-19 pandemic, disruption of supply chains, Challenges such as terrorism and climate change are being faced, which are disproportionately affecting developing countries.

PM Modi said that India attaches priority to addressing these concerns and emphasizes on human-centred development in collaboration with Japan and other partners. He said India aims to act as a bridge between diverse voices and promote a constructive agenda focused on achieving shared objectives for the betterment of humanity.
