France urges G7 to force China to put pressure on Russia

Emmanuel Macron called on the G7 countries to decide that China should put pressure on Russia on the Ukrainian file, reports Le Point. The French president wants the Western powers to adopt a position “both attractive and demanding” vis-à-vis the PRC.

Paris intends to express its position vis-à-vis Beijing, urging Europeans not to join the confrontational approach propagated by Washington, the article indicates.

“During the G7, we will say that China plays an important role, that China has a status, that China has responsibilities, that we want it to assume them,” Macron said, quoted by an anonymous adviser.

According to him, the leaders “will agree at the G7 to say” that China must “use its influence on Russia so that it stops its aggression against Ukraine”.

Earlier, British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak called on the G7 to fight “economic coercion”. The statement from London referred to instances of “economic pressure” from Russia and China on other countries. At the same time, the United States, Britain, Canada, Japan and other countries announced the next round of sanctions against the Russian Federation.

Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said the G7 summit decisions aim for a dual lockdown of Russia and China. The Chinese Foreign Ministry, under the decisions of the “Group of Seven”, noted that the international community will not accept “Western rules”, and the times when Western countries interfered in the affairs of Sovereign states are gone forever.
