AFP – Hiroshima:

Japan’s Kyodo news agency reported that G7 leaders have urged China to pressure Russia to stop its war in Ukraine. The agency said that the leaders of the group, during their summit held in Hiroshima, Japan, in the presence of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, called for a peaceful solution to Taiwan issues with China. The leaders expressed willingness to build “constructive and stable” relations with China. The leaders pledged to make efforts to maintain financial stability and stimulate growth, and they also said that the group would launch a platform to strengthen “deterrence” against what they called economic “coercion”, according to Kyodo. Earlier today, the Ukrainian president announced that he will hold important meetings with the G7 leaders. Zelenskyy said, on his Twitter account, that the meetings will discuss strengthening cooperation with his country to achieve “victory” in its war against Russia, and added: “Peace will become closer now.” The Ukrainian president arrived earlier today in Hiroshima to participate in the G7 summit, in his first visit to an Asian country since the outbreak of the Ukrainian-Russian war. According to Kyodo Agency. From his side, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said that the decisions taken at the G7 summit held in Hiroshima, Japan, aim to “contain” Russia and China. “Look at the decisions that were discussed and taken at the G7 summit in Hiroshima, aimed at containing both Russia and China,” Lavrov added in a televised meeting. Concerned about the outsized role that China now plays in all supply chains, from semiconductors to critical minerals, the G7 issued an official statement outlining a common strategy for future dealings with the world’s second largest economy. “We call on China to pressure Russia to stop its military aggression, and to immediately, fully and unconditionally withdraw its forces from Ukraine,” the G7 leaders said in the statement. And they warned that countries that try to weaponize trade will face “consequences”, in a strong message to Beijing over practices that Washington says amount to economic bullying.
