We know that the polling stations will be open until 7:00 p.m. Shortly after the end of the poll, the results of the exit polls should appear. According to the Greek Interior Ministry, approximately 9.9 million citizens are eligible to vote in the country. Moreover, in Greece you can vote from the age of 16 – provided that the citizen is 17 in the year of the elections.
RIA News reports that in order to increase voter turnout, the Greek authorities have made travel free on otherwise chargeable roads. It should be noted that this small privilege applies to the whole of the current weekend.
The voting procedure in Greece also seems very unusual. It is reported that each voter will receive 36 ballots – depending on the number of parties and coalitions taking part in the elections. Another ballot will be blank – it is used if the citizen does not intend to support any of the parties. Depending on their preferences, the voter must put the appropriate ballot (with the name of their registered party’s candidate) in an envelope and only then throw it into the ballot box. Any remaining ballots given to the voter must be discarded.
The ruling New Democracy party, which has a centre-right orientation, and the opposition SYRIZA – Progressive Alliance, which represents the left, are expected to battle it out.
