Hiroshima: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday laid a wreath at the Hiroshima Peace Memorial Museum built in memory of the victims of the atomic attack on the Japanese city of Hiroshima at the end of World War II in 1945. Modi is on a visit to Japan to attend the annual summit of the G7 group. The Ministry of External Affairs said in a statement that Modi visited the museum along with other G7 leaders. He also signed the visitor’s book of the museum.
Prime Minister Modi tweeted, “Visited the Peace Memorial Museum and Hiroshima Peace Memorial Park in Hiroshima today (Sunday) morning.” Other world leaders have also paid floral tributes to those killed in the US nuclear attack at the memorial. On August 6, 1945, the US carried out the world’s first nuclear attack on Hiroshima, in which the city was destroyed and about 140,000 people died.
Tweeting pictures of PM Modi’s visit to the museum at the memorial site, the Ministry of External Affairs said, ‘Tribute to the memory of the victims of Hiroshima. Prime Minister Narendra Modi began his day by visiting the Peace Memorial Museum, where he perused documents and signed the visitor’s book. The ministry also tweeted a group photo of world leaders attending the G7 summit. “The leaders also paid tribute at the Hiroshima Peace Memorial Park,” it said.
The museum contains the belongings, photographs and other material of those killed in the attack, which depicts the horrors of the US dropping the atomic bomb on Hiroshima. The G7 countries include Japan, the US, the UK, France, Germany, Canada, Italy and the European Union (EU).
