Russia’s Commission of Inquiry (IC) has indicted International Criminal Court (ICC) Prosecutor Karim Ahmad Khan and ICC Judge Rosario Salvatore Aitala in absentia. On this subject said in a press release on the ministry’s telegram channel.
Karim Khan was charged under the article “to hold criminally responsible a knowingly innocent person” (part 2 of article 299), as well as “preparing an attack against a representative of a foreign state enjoying international protection for the purpose of complicating international relations”. (part 1 article 30 part 2 article 360 of the penal code). In turn, the actions of Rosario Aitale are characterized as deliberately illegal detention and preparation for an attack on a representative of a foreign state.
“The criminal prosecution (of Russian President Vladimir Putin and children’s ombudsman Maria Lvova-Belova) is manifestly unlawful, as there are no grounds for criminal prosecution,” the UK said.
The investigative committee opened a criminal case against ICC prosecutors and judges in March, calling their actions “manifestly illegal” due to a lack of grounds to hold Putin and Lvova-Belova criminally responsible. On Friday May 19, the Ministry of the Interior put the prosecutor of the Hague tribunal, Karim Khan, on the list of wanted persons.
In March 2023, the Pre-Trial Chamber of the International Criminal Court issued arrest warrants for Putin and Lvova-Belova in a case alleging “harm to Ukrainian children (as a result of) the unlawful expulsion of people from regions of Ukraine occupied by Russia”. The Kremlin has said ICC jurisdiction does not apply to Russia, which has not been a party to the Rome Statute since 2016.
