Washington urges Al-Burhan to be ‘flexible’ in Jeddah talks

A statement from the US State Department said on Saturday that “Secretary Anthony Blinken spoke with Al-Burhan about ongoing talks in Saudi Arabia and urged him to show flexibility and a spirit of leadership.” .

Blinken renewed the United States’ condemnation of the acts of violence committed by both parties to the conflict in Sudan, the army and the Rapid Support Forces, in recent weeks, which have resulted in hundreds of deaths and displacement. of over a million people.

The US Secretary of State stressed that “the Jeddah agreement will allow the delivery of humanitarian assistance and basic services that the Sudanese people desperately need”.

“The United States is steadfast in its support of the democratic aspirations of the Sudanese people for civilian government and a stable and democratic Sudan,” the statement concluded.

Earlier on Saturday, an informed Sudanese source told Sky News Arabia that the military and the Rapid Support Forces reached a truce agreement to allow humanitarian corridors to open, during the talks in Jeddah.

“According to the agreement, the truce will be for 7 days, subject to renewal,” the source said.

The fighting continues

Alongside the talks, airstrikes rained down on the outskirts of Khartoum on Friday night and Saturday morning. Fighting between the army and the RSF has led to a breakdown in public order, with rampant looting for which both sides blame each other. Stocks of food, cash and basic necessities are running out. Witnesses spoke of airstrikes in southern Omdurman and northern Bahri, two towns opposite Khartoum on the other side of the Nile. Witnesses said some of these strikes took place near the Broadcasting and Television Authority in Omdurman.
