has emerged as China has indeed become an important and deep study, research and production center in the field of science and technology. There has been incredible progress in the field of science and technology and China has made its mark in the world community by creating new and advanced technological products in this field.
China has made significant progress in the Internet, biotechnology, electricity, computing, the latest communication technology, energy technology, and space research. Therefore, China has gained a new leadership role in the field of science and technology. It is worth mentioning that in the past two decades, Chinese R&D investment has increased significantly, outpacing the growth rate of the US and the EU. China is now the world’s second leading performer in R&D spending, accounting for 20 percent of total world R&D spending. It is also increasingly prominent in industries that make intensive use of scientific and technological knowledge.
However, the US has led the world in the production of scientific knowledge for decades, both in terms of quantity and quality. At the same time, the European Union has overtaken the US in the number of scientific publications since 1994. But China now publishes more scientific publications than any other country except the US. A particularly large increase in published papers in computer science and engineering reflects China’s scientific priorities.
Due to significant advances in science and engineering education, science and technology performance has improved dramatically. With nearly one-quarter of all first university degrees in science and engineering worldwide, China is the world’s leading producer of graduate science and engineering degrees. Over the past decade, the country has awarded more PhDs in natural sciences and engineering than any other country in the world.
Indeed, there is no accident behind China’s rise in science and technology. The Chinese leadership views science and technology as an integral part of economic development and has taken steps to develop science and technology infrastructure. Furthermore, having China as an additional strong pole in the world of global science would benefit many.
