In the Philippines, the country’s historic Central Post Office burned down – Reuters

The fire broke out around 11:45 p.m. local time, according to the Office of Fire Protection, and the situation was raised to the highest fire alert level. The fire was brought under control around 7 a.m., leaving a charred roof and upper floors of the building. CNN . His case is being established.

Photographs and video footage show flames and thick smoke billowing from the windows of the neoclassical building, known for its majestic ornate pillared entrance. The building is located in the historic old town of Manila, close to other tourist attractions along the Pasig River which runs through the capital.

The post office was built in 1926. It was badly damaged during World War II but rebuilt in 1946, retaining most of its original building. It was declared an “Important Cultural Property” in 2018, meaning the country’s oldest post office had “outstanding cultural, artistic, and historical significance to the Philippines.” The building currently houses the Philippine Postal Corporation, the government postal service that handles everything from regular mail and parcels to specialized stamp collections.
