You want to sleep… stop looking at the clock

In a recent study of nearly 5,000 people, researchers at Indiana University found that looking at a watch while trying to sleep made participants more likely to have trouble sleeping.

Professor Spencer Dawson, from the Department of Psychological and Brain Sciences, said: “We have found that time monitoring exacerbates symptoms of insomnia. The more stressed you are, the harder it is to sleep.”

“The only thing people can do is not look at their watch, ditch the smartwatch, put the phone away so they don’t check the time,” Dawson said.

According to the researchers, trying to avoid time-watching behaviors can help patients sleep better and reduce the use of sleep aids.
