Cultural divides in the United States have merged with political divides, according to a new national poll from NBC News.

The poll revealed strong divisions on key cultural issues – attitudes toward racism, LGBTQ people, and even the fundamental goals of American society.

Half of Americans, 50%, believe society should encourage greater respect for traditional social and moral values, while 42% believe society should encourage greater tolerance for people of different backgrounds and lifestyles. different.

This ratio has changed little since respondents were asked about this question in 2013.

However, if you delve into these numbers, you can find a deep split in the party.

Three-quarters of Republicans believe the country should promote traditional social and moral values, while 67% of Democrats favor greater tolerance for people of other backgrounds and lifestyles.

Independent opinion was split, with 49% in favor of traditional values ​​and 41% in favor of greater tolerance.

“The poll showed an overexcited country seething with outrage at our political leaders and too often at each other,” said Democratic pollster Jeff Horovitt of polling firm Hart Research, who conducted the poll with his colleague. The poll “showed a country deeply divided on these issues, not only politically, but also along ethnic and generational lines,” Horovitt added.

Respondents were also split when asked what they thought of the statement: “America is a country where people are judged not by skin color, but by personality.” The vast majority of blacks (79%) and Hispanics (61%) disagreed with this statement, but just over half of whites (53%) agreed.

Overall, 47% of respondents agreed with this statement, 52% disagreed.
