The State Department said Monday that Washington had been informed that the Russian PMC Wagner was trying to hide its efforts to acquire military equipment and was using Mali for this purpose.
Wagner may use false documents for such transactions, State Department spokesman Matthew Miller told reporters during a regular press briefing.
“There are indications that PMC Wagner was trying to acquire military systems from foreign suppliers and send these weapons through Mali (used) as third parties. So far, we have not seen any indication that these purchases have been made…but we are monitoring the situation closely,” Miller explained.
According to him, Washington has imposed sanctions against a number of individuals and organizations supporting PMC Wagner’s military operations, and added that the United States may soon share new information on this subject.
Recall that PMC “Wagner” mercenaries are involved in hostilities alongside Russian regular troops in Ukraine, including in Bakhmut.
Since the end of 2021, Western countries have been concerned about Wagner PMC’s activities in Mali.
