ADNOC and TAQA announce project to provide sustainable water supply

The project aims to develop a central seawater treatment facility and a world-class transmission network to supply water to operations in the Bab and Bu Hasa fields in Abu Dhabi.

The new facility will be used to replace existing deep saline groundwater systems at both fields, which will help reduce energy consumption associated with water injection operations by up to 30%, according to an official statement. of the company, viewed by Sky News Arabia. .

The project will be connected to the electricity grid and obtain 100% of its electricity needs from clean energy sources.

ADNOC and TAQA will hold a controlling 51% stake in the project company (25.5% each), and the remaining 49% stake will be held by a consortium comprising Orascom Construction SAI and Metito Utilities Ltd.

The consortium will arrange financing for the construction and development phase of the project under the Build-Own-Operate-Transfer (BOOT) model, on the condition that the entire project be returned to ADNOC after 30 years.

It should be noted that the project will supply more than 110 million gallons per day of filtered seawater based on “nano-filter” technology through 75 km of transport pipelines, more than 230 km of distribution pipelines and two pumping stations, ensuring that the needs of ADNOC’s land operations are met from sustainable water sources.

In this regard, Abdul Moneim Al-Kindi, CEO of ADNOC Exploration, Development and Production, said, “The project will improve the energy efficiency of ADNOC’s onshore operations by replacing less efficient deep saline groundwater systems with a central seawater treatment facility and a water station. And by returning much of the value of the project back to the local economy, this important initiative will further stimulate economic and industrial growth and create more business opportunities for the private sector.

More than 60% of the value of this project will be redirected during the development and operation phases to the local economy through the ADNOC program to strengthen local added value.

In turn, Jassim Thabet, Group CEO and Managing Director of Abu Dhabi National Energy Company (TAQA), said: “As TAQA is the leading utility company in the United Arab Emirates, it is committed to initiating partnerships and to harness its expertise and capabilities to help promote environmental responsibility and safeguard water security and support the country’s economic growth.
