The announcement came after the conclusion of the second day of talks aimed at preparing a constitutional basis for the Libyan elections in the seaside resort of Bouznika, south of the western capital, Rabat.
The 6+6 Committee includes representatives of the Libyan Parliament and the Supreme Council of State, and its task is to prepare the laws for the elections which have been postponed since December 2021.
Omar Abu Boulifa, representative of the High Council of State on the committee, said:
The next legislative authority will consist of two chambers (the House of Representatives and the Senate). It was agreed how to elect the head of state. The legislative and presidential elections will be organized according to simultaneous procedures. We have made progress in identifying and allocating seats in the House of Representatives and the Senate. The current Libyan reality compels us to prioritize the interest of the Libyan citizen over all narrow calculations.
For his part, the representative of the Libyan House of Representatives on the committee, Jalal Al-Shuwaidi, said:
We continue to work to reach a consensus formula regarding the possibility of dual nationals and the military presenting themselves. The date of the elections will be agreed in coordination with the Electoral Commission. Laws will not be made to suit people, and anyone who qualifies has the right to run. I do not see that the elections will take place at the end of the year.
