The ceasefire agreement, which is being monitored by Saudi Arabia and the United States, as well as the two parties to the conflict represented in the army and the Rapid Support Forces, came after 5 weeks of fighting intense in Khartoum and the spread of violence to other parts of the country, such as the Darfur region in western Sudan.

Residents of Omdurman, one of the three cities that together form Khartoum state, said there was an exchange of fire which took place in several areas on Tuesday evening.

They said they heard heavy artillery fire near the Wadi Sayedna military base on the outskirts of the capital.

A ceasefire that came into effect on Monday evening led to a relative lull in fighting in Khartoum on Tuesday. However, there were few signs of a rapid increase in humanitarian aid, as teams of aid said that many supplies and aid workers arriving in Port Sudan on the Red Sea coast They are waiting for permits and security guarantees.

Fighting broke out between the Sudanese army and the Rapid Support Forces, while internationally-backed plans for a transition to democratic elections were being finalized.

Sudan was already facing heavy humanitarian pressures before the conflict erupted on April 15, forcing more than a million people to flee their homes and threatening to destabilize the region.

According to the United Nations, the number of people in need of assistance has risen to 25 million, more than half of Sudan’s population.
