Shoigu vowed to respond “extremely harshly” to Ukraine’s attacks on Russian territory

Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu told the department’s board that the Russian military would respond “quickly and extremely harshly” to Ukraine’s actions, similar to the attack on the Belgorod region.

“We will continue to react quickly and extremely harshly to such actions by Ukrainian militants,” the head of the defense ministry said.

According to him, the Russian armed forces repelled an attack by Ukrainian forces that entered the territory of the Belgorod region near the Kozinka checkpoint on May 22 and destroyed vehicles and armored vehicles, as well as 70 militants.

“During the anti-terrorist operation, nationalist formations were blocked and defeated by airstrikes, artillery fire and the active actions of units covering the state border of the Western Military District,” Shoigu said.

On the morning of May 22, a Ukrainian sabotage and reconnaissance group entered the Grayvoronsky district of the Belgorod region. Russia’s Freedom Legion* and the Russian Volunteer Corps (RDK) taking part in hostilities alongside Ukraine took responsibility for the invasion. As a result of the attack, 13 civilians were injured, Kommersant wrote about the death of two soldiers as a result of the shelling of the Graivoronsky district. On May 23, the Ministry of Defense announced the defeat of a group of attackers.
