Trump impeachment trial set to ‘buy silence’

Manhattan District Court Judge Juan Merchan announced the decision during a hearing Trump attended via remote communication from Florida.

Trump has pleaded not guilty to 34 counts of falsifying business records.

The main focus of Tuesday’s hearing was for Merchant to formally notify Trump of an order restraining him from disclosing certain evidence to third parties, including the media and social media.

At the start of the session, Mershan asked Trump if he had a copy of the order, and Trump replied, “Yes, I have.”

Prosecutors said the order preventing him from disclosing certain evidence was necessary because of Trump’s history of using social media as a platform to attack others and the risk of witness harassment.

Setting a date for Trump’s trial means he will stand trial in the 2024 presidential primaries, in which he seeks support from Republicans.

Trump is currently the favorite to win the Republican nomination.

Florida Governor Ron DeSantis is expected to announce his intention to run on Wednesday, according to two sources who spoke to Reuters.
