Three Yazidi fighters belonging to the Turkish Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK) were killed in a Turkish air strike on Tuesday in Iraq’s northern province of Nineveh. The incident happened at 5:00 am local time (0200 GMT). The counter-terrorism service of Iraq’s semi-autonomous Kurdistan region said in a statement that a Turkish plane bombed the headquarters of a Yazidi militia near the city of Sinjar, some 120 km west of Mosul, the provincial capital of Nineveh, killing three fighters.

The Sinjar Security Unit (YBS) is a Yazidi militia formed in 2007 to protect the Yazidi community in Iraq. The group has strong ties to the PKK group. The PKK is listed as a terrorist group by Turkey, the US and the European Union. The Turkish military often conducts airstrikes and bombardments in northern Iraq, especially Mount Qandil.
