The mayor said he was pleased to recognize Sehgal’s achievements. He said, a proud Indian-American who has strengthened New York for nearly two decades. The Meerut-born author lived in the US for over two decades, moving from Delhi to New York after her graduation in 1995. Sehgal says she missed real Indian experiences and community after moving to America. The dearth of quality and authentic Indian programs and classes became even more apparent after becoming a mother.
As an active mother, Sehgal says that awareness about one’s heritage, culture and language is important for children to become self-aware and confident. Sehgal writes on her website, As a cultural educator I look forward to providing children with authentic, deep and inspiring experiences. Through classes and programmes, we can expose them to different cultures. This can help them become knowledgeable, open-minded and respected individuals. He founded The Culture Tree in 2016 with the aim of providing South Asian children an opportunity to learn about and be proud of their South Asian culture.
