US made new visa policy for democratic elections in Bangladesh

Dhaka. US Secretary of State Antony Blinken has announced a new visa policy for Bangladesh, which will not allow travel to those suspected of disrupting the South Asian country’s elections in January 2024. Is.

In a statement on Wednesday, Blinken said, “Today I am invoking Section 212(a)(3)(c)(3c)” of the Immigration and Nationality Act in support of Bangladesh’s goal of holding free, fair and peaceful general elections. Announcing the new visa policy under.

“Under this policy, the US can impose a visa ban on any Bangladeshi national it believes could interfere with the conduct of democratic elections in Bangladesh,” Blinken said. Current and former Bangladeshi officials, members of pro-government and opposition political parties, members of law enforcement agencies, judiciary and security services may come under the purview of the new policy.

The US informed the Bangladeshi government of the decision on May 3, according to a statement issued by the US State Department. Meanwhile, Bangladesh’s main opposition Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) is a non-party caretaker for the elections. is waging a campaign aimed at restoring the government. The BNP says that no election can be free under the rule of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.

The BNP has also vowed not to participate in any election under the present Awami League-led government.
