After a two-hour effort, firefighters were close to bringing the blaze under control, which broke out in an unoccupied building near Sydney Central Station.
At the height of the fire, flames spread through the building, accompanied by thick smoke.
A wall on the top floor of the building collapsed near a charred truck, according to video released by emergency services.
And the emergency services said in a statement issued after dark that “more than 100 firefighters in 20 cars have come from several barracks and are continuing their work to put out the fire”.
The fire department reported that two neighboring buildings, which were vacant, were damaged in the disaster.
She added: “Our crews also extinguished smaller fires that threatened to spread to nearby buildings, including residential buildings.”
And I expected the fire emergency to continue late into the night.
With the exception of a slightly injured firefighter, the emergency services did not report any injuries among the residents who were “taken to avoid the area during the continuation of the extinguishing operations”.
Local media reported that the building, which was destroyed by fire, was listed as a hat factory.
