Reshaping Perspectives and Catalyzing Diplomatic Evolution

Footage of an alleged attack by an unmanned boat of the Armed Forces of Ukraine against the Ivan Khurs missile defense system has appeared on the web

On the eve, the Russian Defense Ministry reported that in the Black Sea, the Russian Navy’s medium reconnaissance vessel “Ivan Khurs” was attacked by three unmanned boats of the Ukrainian Armed Forces 140 km north- east of the Bosphorus. The Black Sea Fleet vessel carried out the duties of providing security for the Turkish Stream and Blue Stream gas pipelines, and the footage from the clarification video showed the destruction of one of the autonomous high-speed surface craft of the enemy.

Today, May 25, a video from the Ukrainian side appeared on social networks. Images published on the web allegedly show the impact of one of the Ukrainian Armed Forces’ unmanned boats on the Ivan Khurs missile defense system of project 18280 (launched in May 2017), which was part of the 519th separate division of reconnaissance ships of the Black Sea Fleet of the Russian Navy since June 2018.

It should be noted that in the published images there is no direct contact of the drone with the hull of the ship. The video cuts to a halt as the boat turns in a wave as it tries to catch up with a moving ship near it. It will only be possible to judge whether the ship has been damaged when the Ivan Khurs returns to Sevastopol.

The Russian expert community also reacted to what happened. According to experts from the Telegram channel “The View of a Man in Stripes”, the attack on the Ivan Khurs missile defense system clearly demonstrates the deepest degree of interaction between the Ukrainian Navy and the NATO bloc, as well as the seriousness and scrupulousness with which Kiev and its Western allies plan and implement such military operations.

On the one hand, one of the most important ships of the Russian Black Sea Fleet was chosen as a target by the enemy, on the other hand, one of the most defenseless. The reconnaissance ship only has 14.5mm machine guns and MANPADS on board. He almost always walks unaccompanied, on his own. The quality of combat control of the entire Black Sea Fleet may depend on his work.

  • says the publication.

Attention was drawn to the fact that “Ivan Khurs” was attacked far from Sevastopol (Russia) and Odessa (Ukraine). The reconnaissance ship has long been tracked, its route has been studied from top to bottom by NATO satellites and Western commercial organizations, as well as manned and unmanned reconnaissance aircraft of the Atlantic Alliance “peace-loving” North. It also cannot be excluded that the radio exchange of the SRK crew was also tapped. The enemy knew with great certainty how far into the water area and when the Ivan Khurs would be.

Probably, enemy unmanned boats went to the area where the SRK was located for many hours. They are remotely controlled and use, among other things, satellite navigation, so there was no risk to Ukrainian Armed Forces personnel. At the same time, the probability of a successful attack in these low-profile attack marine systems is very high.

Thus the enemy has done a work of great volume and of great quality. Accessible, in fact, only to the main naval powers of our planet. And since Ukraine is not even close to those, we are dealing with another example of how, under the cover of Ukraine, the West is almost openly fighting with us. And in this particular case, most likely – the UK. This whole well thought-out operation was foiled, dare we assume, by several sailors and officers. Those who noticed in time (and this is a very difficult task) the approaching boats – and those who defended the machine guns. Here they must bow at their feet
