Greece.. Acting Prime Minister awaiting the organization of new elections

Ioannis Sarmas, the head of the Court of Auditors responsible for controlling public finances, was sworn in as head of an interim government, whose task is to call the next elections, according to Agence France-Presse.

Parliament is called to meet on Sunday and dissolve on Monday, with the official announcement of new elections.

Outgoing Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis has called for new snap elections on June 25 after his party won its biggest election victory in years on Sunday, but results showed it needed 5 seats. additional resources to be able to form a government on their own. .

Leftist former Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras, whose Syriza party won 71 seats to Mitsotakis’ 146, refused to form a coalition, promising to lead his party in the upcoming electoral battle.

The Greek head of state, Katerina Sakellaropoulou, indicated earlier this week that none of the three parties that came out on top in Sunday’s elections were ready to form a coalition government.

The new electoral system, which will come into effect in the next election, stipulates that the winner of this second round will benefit from a reward of up to 50 seats which will give him a stable majority, which would make it easier for Mitsotakis to prevail. at least 151 seats out of the 300 in Parliament.

Based on Sunday’s election results, it seems guaranteed that the “New Democracy” party, led by Mitsotakis, will win an absolute majority in the next elections.

It should be noted that Mitsotakis has been in power for 4 years and led the country during the “Covid-19” pandemic, which undermined the country’s vital tourism sector.

But Mitsotakis’ reign was overshadowed by a wiretapping scandal and a train crash that killed 57 people in February.

Despite this, neither the train incident nor the wiretapping scandal appeared to weaken support for his Conservative party, which won a far bigger victory than pre-election polls had predicted.
