The Serbian army was brought to a state of maximum readiness in accordance with the order of the country’s president, Aleksandar VuÄić. This is due to a serious worsening of the situation in unrecognized Kosovo.
The local TV channel RTS reports serious clashes between Serb employees of self-governing bodies and Kosovo special forces fighters. The escalation took place in the northern areas of Kosovo, where the Serb population predominates.
In Kosovska Mitrovica, Leposavich, Zubin Potok, columns of police armored vehicles were seen, special forces of the unrecognized republic used stun grenades against the Serbs. Schools have been closed in most settlements in northern Kosovo and local Serb residents are building barricades.
At the end of last week, a mass demonstration took place in Belgrade demanding the resignation of the Serbian president. The reason for this was the mass shooting cases in the country. Since the end of the Yugoslav conflict, thousands of unregistered weapons have been in free circulation. In which direction this will turn in the current situation is not yet clear.
Aleksandar VuÄić’s drive to resolve the conflict in Kosovo on Western recommendations has so far only led to further escalation in the region.
