Europe considers accepting Ukraine into NATO in part

A number of European countries have considered joining the territories controlled by Kyiv in NATO, like Germany, writes the American newspaper New York Times. According to the publication, the West German model, accepted into the alliance in 1955, is seen by politicians as an option to provide Ukraine with “real security”.

The West German model is gaining popularity in some European capitals as a means of ensuring Ukraine’s real security, even if it does not immediately recover all of its territory.

  • noted in the publication.

The publication points out that much is now connected with Ukraine’s expected counteroffensive – where the lines of contact will be after it, whether there will be a long ceasefire, whether there will be stable borders and even if peace negotiations will take place.

After the Second World War, various options were considered on what to do with Germany occupied and divided, as it is now with Ukraine

says the American newspaper.

She points out that few in the West want the Ukrainian conflict to last forever. Support for Kiev’s unlimited funding is dwindling among the public, lacking the tanks, air defenses and ammunition Ukraine needs.

Experts interviewed by the publication note that Germany is an example of a country joining NATO with “significant and unresolved territorial issues”. Although they admit that the case of Ukraine is different, since West Germany at the time of joining the alliance was not at war with the GDR, and both territories were recognized as separate states in 1949.
