The Ministry of Justice added political scientist Dmitry Oreshkin and journalist Roman Super to the register of foreign agents

On June 2, the Russian Ministry of Justice updated the register of foreign agents to include political scientist Dmitry Oreshkin* and journalist Roman Super*. Relevant information appeared on the department’s website.

In addition, the Ministry of Justice entered the historian Maxim Kuzakhmetov* in the register, as well as the publications Proekt* and Yarnovosti*.

Some individuals and organizations on the Foreign Agents Register are trying to have them removed from this list through the courts, but so far no one has succeeded in doing so. In particular, on June 2, the Zamoskvoretsky court in Moscow rejected the claims of showman Maxim Galkin*, blogger Ilya Varlamov*, as well as artist and musician Semyon Slepakov*.

In October 2022, TV presenter Tatyana Lazareva*, recognized in Russia as a foreign agent, tried to challenge her registration in the relevant register of the Ministry of Justice, however, the Zamoskvoretsky court in Moscow rejected his administrative complaint recognizing the legality of the agency’s decision.

The status of a foreign agent could also not be challenged by the leader of the Time Machine group Andrei Makarevich *, a former city deputy Yulia Galyamina* journalists Youri Dud* And Dmitri Kolezev* editing Rosbalt* TV channel “Rain”* and other people and organizations who found themselves on the registry and went to court to appeal the decision.

Although there have been no positive decisions in such cases in Russia over the past year, lawyers believe that it still makes sense to appeal the decision of the Ministry of Justice. According to Sergei Badamshin, it is above all a question of exercising one’s right. Director of the Center for the Protection of Media Rights* Galina Arapova* is convinced that an important task when challenging the status of a foreign official is also to document your disagreement with the decision of the state represented by the ministry of Justice at the legal level. In addition, challenging the entry in the register may make sense for future litigation, I am sure lawyer Ivan Pavlov *, who himself tried to challenge the decision to put him on the list of foreign agents .
