The Trinity icon painted by Andrey Rublev will remain in the Cathedral of Christ the Savior for a year. After that, she will be sent back to Trinity-Sergius Lavra, the Patriarch of Moscow and All Rus’ Kirill said on Saturday June 3.
“Tomorrow I will not be able to be in this temple and in general in Lavra precisely because in the Cathedral of Christ the Savior we will pray before the upturned image of the Holy Trinity. Then, during the year, the miraculous image will be in the Cathedral of Christ the Savior so that Muscovites and guests of the capital can bow to this great shrine. And then that image will come back here, to the sacred temple in a historic place,” the patriarch said (quote from the agency TASS ).
The head of the Russian Orthodox Church also noted that Rublev’s “Trinity” is “connected with special events in the life of our people.” According to the patriarch, now that the country “opposes enormous hostile forces”, the icon “returns to the church so that, praying before it, we praise the Lord and at the same time ask him to help our country. .”

Transfer of “Trinity” to the Russian Orthodox Church
Russian President Vladimir Putin decided to transfer the “Trinity” to the Russian Orthodox Church in mid-May. The Moscow Patriarchate and All Rus’ press service noted that such a decision was made “in response to numerous requests from believers.”
On Friday it became known that Rublev’s “Trinity” from June 4 to June 18 will be stored in the Cathedral of Christ the Savior in a special sealed capsule. TASS informed citing a source that the capsule, which will ensure “the stability of a predetermined humidity level”, is already ready and will soon be installed in the cathedral.
The expert council of the Tretyakov Gallery previously concluded that in its current state it is impossible to move the icon from the museum, preliminary restoration is necessary. Honored Art Worker, head of the Department of Ancient Russian Art at the State Institute of Art History, Lev Lifshits compared the icon to a gravely ill person who “will not survive transport”.
Art historian Ksenia Korobeynikova said in September last year that after sending the Trinity to the Trinity-Sergius Lavra in Sergiev Posad, more than 60 “significant changes” were found to the icon, including five emergency sections.
Russian President’s press secretary Dmitry Peskov said last week that the “Trinity” will be sent to the Cathedral of Christ the Savior in its current state, then experts will decide on restoration.
