Reshaping Perspectives and Catalyzing Diplomatic Evolution

Congress did not hold the British responsible for the train accidents: Rahul Gandhi

New York: Congress leader Rahul Gandhi stepped up his attack on the BJP-led Centre, saying Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the BJP and the RSS have a habit of looking back and always blaming someone or the other for the past. He also said that the Congress did not blame the British for the train accidents that happened during its rule, but the minister took responsibility. Addressing a gathering at the Javits Center in New York, Rahul said that the BJP and the RSS are unable to see the future. Ask them anything, they look back. Ask them why the train accident took place, they will say that it happened during the time of Congress as well. When you ask why the periodic table was removed from the books, they will say that Congress did it 60 years ago. They have a habit of looking back.

Citing an example, the Congress leader said: You all have come here in your car, just imagine if you had only looked in the rear view mirror while driving, you would have met with an accident. Targeting the BJP, he said that this is the specialty of Modi. He is trying to drive an Indian car and always looks in the rear view mirror and then he does not understand why this car is crashing and not moving. Same idea with BJP, RSS, you listen to their ministers. You will never find them talking about the future, they will always talk about the past and blame someone or the other.

Rahul further said, that I remember a train accident when Congress was in power. The Congress did not say that it was the fault of the British that the train met with an accident. The then Congress minister accepted his responsibility and said, “I am resigning.” His comments on the international forum on the Balasore train accident came hours after Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnav’s resignation was called for. 275 people lost their lives and over 1,000 were injured in the horrific train accident in Balasore on Friday evening. Rahul Gandhi said that this is the problem with us, we make excuses and we are not accepting the reality we are facing.

Talking about the relevance of NRIs in the country’s politics, the senior Congress leader said that the central architects of modern India were NRIs, Mahatma Gandhi was an NRI. India’s independence movement started in South Africa. Nehru, BR Ambedkar, Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, and Subhash Chandra Bose were all NRIs and they all came home with different views. He said that the BJP and the RSS talk about the past, while the Congress talks about the future. He said, that I believe one of the reasons I came here is to build a bridge between India and America if we want to build India where most of our youth are employed.

What does this look like and how do we meet the challenge posed by the Chinese? What are our views on the revolution in mobility, data and connectivity and the changes taking place in the energy sector? Indian Overseas Congress secretary Virendra Vashisht said that before Rahul’s address to the overseas Indians here, all leaders and people observed a minute’s silence for the victims of the Balasore train tragedy. Rahul is on a six-day tour of America. He has addressed several programs and also participated in meetings in the cities of San Francisco and Washington.
