Rising trend of suicide and fierce competition among youth

– Yogesh Kumar Goyal

In Kota, Rajasthan, which has become the main coaching hub of the country due to excessive mental pressure regarding the preparation of competitive examinations, incidents of suicide by students often come to the fore. Now increasing cases of suicides by students even in reputed engineering and medical institutions have started shaking the society. This increasing trend of suicide among students is now enough to force the government as well as the society to think seriously. In some cases, students have started dying out of frustration even after not being able to solve the question paper properly during the examinations and many times due to lack of proper preparation for the examination. For the last few years, such tragic incidents are increasing continuously. This increasing trend of suicide among the youth of the country, especially among children below the age of 18 years, is very worrying. Due to the fierce competition in education and career and the increasing expectations of parents and teachers, the increasing unnecessary pressure of studies on the students is the biggest reason for this, which has created a critical situation in front of the students. Many children cannot handle this pressure, due to which depression develops in them.

It has become clear from many studies that as the examinations approach, anxiety and depression increase among the students and in some cases this increasing depression becomes the reason for their suicide. There is now a lot of competition in engineering and medical colleges due to the abundance of seats, while in educational institutions like Delhi University, there is fierce competition for admission to general undergraduate courses. In such a situation, students are deeply confused about their education and future. Some are worried about career or job, while some are struggling with family financial crisis. If you look at the statistics of the National Crime Records Bureau, where a total of 12526 students committed suicide in the country in 2020, in 2021 this figure increased to 13089. By the way, this problem of suicide is not limited to students only, but the way in which the cases of suicide are increasing year after year in the country, it is becoming a cause of serious concern for the entire society. According to the World Health Organization, one person commits suicide every 40 seconds in the world, that is, every year about eight lakh people end their lives through suicide, out of which a large number of suicide cases are in the age group of 15 to 29 years. While the number of those who attempt suicide is much more than this.

According to WHO statistics, 79 percent of suicides worldwide are committed by people from lower and middle class countries and a large number of such youths are on whose shoulders the future of any country rests. In the past years, the incidents of suicide have increased rapidly all over the world, but the number of suicides in India is quite worrying. Depression is continuously increasing among people, due to which some such people take heart-rending steps like suicide. Frustrated with life, the increasing trend of suicide is becoming a cause of serious concern. According to psychiatrists, whenever a person or youth is suffering from deep mental stress, some changes are seen in his behavior than before. In such a situation, it is a great responsibility of the people and family members present around them to cooperate with such a person or youth in whatever need they may have, whether emotional, mental or physical, try to boost their morale so that that person does not feel alone. According to psychiatrists, suicide is a very serious problem and depression is mostly attributed to suicide, which is the main reason for about 90 percent of such cases, but depression cannot be held solely responsible for all suicides. According to him, the idea of committing suicide develops inside a person when he cannot get out of any difficulty.

As far as the students are concerned, somewhere the parents are also to blame for the increasing cases of student suicides. In fact, in most of the cases, it is seen that most of the parents or guardians do not understand the ability and interest of their children properly and expect more from them and remain unaware of their mood even at the time of examination. In many cases, such students take wrong steps due to excessive mental pressure. In such cases, parents, close people and teachers can play the biggest role in getting the students out of the mental pressure, who should explain them sympathetically that their life is not determined by any failure and our life is the only such thing. , which we cannot get again. Encourage them that they can touch the heights of success even by working hard to the best of their ability with positive thinking. Although efforts are being made by the government, social organizations and educational institutions in recent years to help students with counseling and to provide medical advice if needed, but there is a need to speed up these efforts.
