What surprised foreign guests on the second day of IMDS-2023

The most modern large landing ship, the latest submarine armed with formidable calibers and even the thinnest optical cable – all this was seen by visitors and participants of the International Maritime Defense Exhibition. The event takes place on the territory of the “Island of Forts” in Kronstadt for the second day.

The large Northern Fleet landing ship “Ivan Gren” is one of the most important participants of the fair. This is the most modern BDK in the Russian Navy. A real giant. This is noticeable against the background of other ships standing at the quay wall. Its length is 135 meters, on board it can carry two helicopters, eighteen tanks and a whole battalion of marines.

In the same ranks with this giant of the seas, the latest diesel-electric submarine “Ufa” with a formidable high-precision missile system “Caliber” was hiding. Here is the corvette “Stoykiy” of the Baltic Fleet. And foreign delegations linger for a long time on Bal’s coastal missile system.

When the excitement of the official opening day of the show has died down a bit, you can carefully study some of the novelties of this large-scale international exhibition.

“It is the thinnest optical installation cable in the world. Its thickness is 600 microns. Americans have 800 microns – the finest products,” said Sergey Lobanov, commercial director of LLC NPP Spetskabel.

The important thing in the little things is pretty much about these advanced developments. These are special purpose cables that are used in both aviation and shipbuilding. According to some characteristics, they have no analogues in the world. For example, a light and strong cable for the space industry is able to withstand temperatures from -196 to +200 degrees.

“We are now conducting R&D on all our cables to extend the lifespan to 60 years. It’s real, it’s just a very difficult test. The trials last two years. This present and future of the nuclear fleet is already used in nuclear powered ships. As far as I know, another reactor has been assembled there and is being prepared for the start of installation in the shipyards,” Lobanov said.

The famous forts of Kronstadt host the rowing race on the sea boats “Yal-6” for the awards of the Commander-in-Chief of the Navy. Cubes and medals were presented to the winners of the competition by the head of the project office for the creation of the tourist and recreational center “Island of Forts” Ksenia Shoigu, and the children’s sailing regatta immediately began.

“Every person who sails has a certain courage to go out to sea, to compete and to be the first, to be the best. Even if it’s not a competition, if it’s training, it still requires courage, desire and love of the sea,” she said.

Almost immediately after the opening ceremony of the children’s regatta, as ordered, the scorching sun for several days was replaced by clouds and a strong Baltic wind. The Gulf of Finland immediately picturesquely turned white with sails.

For more details, see the story of Zvezda correspondent Roman Zakurdaev.

Earlier it was reported the opening of the Children’s Sailing Regatta for the Navy Commander-in-Chief’s Cup at IMDS-2023. Ksenia Shoigu congratulated the participants for their courage and desire to win.
