Expert Paul Henkin explains how the Titan sank

OceanGate Expeditions, which owned the Titan Bathyscaphe that sank in the Atlantic, has been warned of a possible disaster. The Wall Street Journal talks about it today. At the same time, representatives of the company refused to conduct an independent technical examination of their device. The death of five people who were inside the bathyscaphe is officially confirmed. Moreover, this did not happen due to the lack of oxygen. Deep tragedy erupted instantly. What is known about the last Titan expedition, Dmitry Antipov found out.

They started talking about the death of the crew of the Titan the day before, oxygen, according to experts, should have ended yesterday at 2:00 p.m. Moscow time. However, according to the wreck of the bathyscaphe, discovered 200 meters from the Titanic, it became clear that the cause of the death of the crew was not linked to the lack of air in the underwater vehicle.

“This morning, the tail cone of the submersible Titan was discovered on the seabed approximately 200 meters from the bow of the Titanic. Further debris was later recovered. After consultation with Joint Command experts, it was determined that they testified to the destruction of the pressure chamber. We immediately notified next of kin of the incident,” said Rear Admiral John Mauger of the First Coast Guard District.

The crew of the submersible “Titan” fell victim to a phenomenon scientifically called implosion. Simply put, implosion is an inward explosion. This could be due to hull damage. The pressure in the cabin decreased, namely, it allowed the metal shell to withstand the gravity of the 4-kilometer water column. Within fractions of a second, the submersible crumpled like a soda can. At this time, the crew had no chance.

“We found five different large pieces of debris which indicate that these are the remains of the Titan. First we found the nose cone, which was outside the pressure port. We then discovered a large field of debris, inside which we found the front of the pressure tap cone. This was the first sign that a disaster had occurred. Shortly after, we found a second field of debris smaller, inside was the other end of the pressure chamber, the rear part and the cap, which, in fact, constituted the whole structure of this pressure vessel”, explained Paul Henkin, research expert underwater.

The crew of the bathyscaphe consisted of five people, they paid 250 thousand dollars for an excursion to the wreckage of the Titanic. The submersible was personally operated by Paul Najeole, the founder of OceanGate, who designed the submersible. Earlier, British millionaire Chris Brown told The Sun he bought a ticket but after inspecting the ship demanded a refund. He was alarmed that “old scaffolding was used for the ballast and the controls were based on computer game controllers”.

Director James Cameron, while filming a film about the crash of the Titanic, also descended on its wreckage, but on Russian Mir-1 and Mir-2 vehicles. He has already expressed his condolences to the families and friends of the deceased researchers, including the creator of the Russian offshore submersible MIR, who knew the founder of OceanGate well.

“I am amazed at how similar these two disasters are. The captain of the Titanic was also repeatedly warned about the presence of ice on the course, and on a moonless night he sped through the ice field. This led to the death of a large number of people. And now, in the same place, a similar tragedy is unfolding, where the warnings have gone unheeded,” said filmmaker James Cameron.

Bathyscaphe began plunging towards the wreck of the Titanic on the afternoon of June 18. After about an hour and a half, communication with the underwater vehicle was lost. At the same time, the microphones of the American submarines recorded the sound of an explosion. US Navy veterans post statements on social media that the US government and Joe Biden himself have long known about the tragedy, but at the same time have kept US residents in the dark, giving false hope of miracle.

The death of the crew of the “Titan” today makes the headlines of the biggest publications in the world. The story has already managed to acquire mystical details. The New York Times published an article yesterday that the wife of Stockton Rush, the owner of the missing bathyscaphe, the great-great-granddaughter of Isidor Strauss and his wife Ida, died in the crash of the Titanic.

Unmanned underwater vehicles continue to operate at the site where the Titan went down. The bodies of the searchers were never found.
