Reshaping Perspectives and Catalyzing Diplomatic Evolution

the organization was founded exactly 78 years ago

The charter, signed in San Francisco by 50 countries, aimed to maintain peace in the post-war period.

On this day, June 26, 1945, the United Nations was officially established. The charter, signed in San Francisco by 50 countries, aimed to maintain peace in the post-war period. Today, the UN is no longer the same and, as many believe, has lost its raison d’être.

The precursor to the United Nations was the League of Nations, an organization formed under similar circumstances after World War I. But the League of Nations lost its effectiveness, without taking any notable steps to stop the Second World War.

In 1941, it was proposed to create a new international body to maintain peace after the war. The initiators were the countries participating in the anti-Hitler coalition. In 1943, the intention was again expressed, the form of the world body was quickly developed, various nuances were thought out.

The charter enshrines the principles of international cooperation, such as: the equality of all members of the United Nations, the settlement of international disputes exclusively by peaceful means, the renunciation of the threat of force in international relations, the non-interference by the United Nations in matters which essentially fall within the internal jurisdiction of any State. As of 2011, 193 countries are members of the UN - almost all sovereign states in the world.

In recent years, the UN has often been criticized, the organization has become ineffective and the attitude towards many countries is biased. Thus, at the beginning of this year, the UN adopted an anti-Russian resolution prepared by Western countries, which demanded the immediate withdrawal of troops from the territory of Ukraine “within its internationally recognized borders”, as well as an end to attacks on Ukrainian infrastructure. At the same time, there are no similar appeals to Kyiv in the resolution.

“The UN, as an international institution obliged to resolve all contradictions in this turbulent world, has become obsolete and has become an instrument of American influence,” said MP Mikhail Sheremet (quoted by RIA Novosti). – The United States is trying to solve its geopolitical tasks and interests with the help of the UN. This means that all meaning of a future existence in such a one-sided format is lost. The UN has ceased to fulfill the mission of an independent peacekeeping platform.

The UN has already been criticized for its inefficiency, its undemocratic nature, its lack of attention to the problems of developing countries, its bureaucracy, its overstaffing and its exorbitant budget.

Photo by Bernd Dittrich on Unsplash It has been estimated that on at least seven occasions the UN has failed to stop wars. These are the Korean War of 1950-1953, the events in Vietnam of 1954-75 and the American intervention, the wars and conflicts between Pakistan and India, the civil war in Angola, etc. Well, all UN statements are only advisory in nature.

All the efforts of the UN itself try to pretend that the organization is effective. For many years there has been talk of a possible reform of the organization. Thus, Russia has repeatedly offered to expand it so that it more realistically reflects the alignment of forces in the world and the representation of states in solving global problems.

Russian President Vladimir Putin proposed changing the structure of the UN and the UN Security Council and bringing “global diversity” to it during his speech at the Valdai forum in the fall of 2022.

Putin stressed that Western civilization is not alone “even in our common Eurasian space”, but continues to impose its worldview and policies.

China and India have proposed reforming the UN Security Council. And Prime Minister Narendra Modi has said the UN risks remaining just a talk shop if it does not change. Even UN Secretary-General António Guterres agrees with him, saying the Security Council is not fulfilling its tasks and needs reforms in line with ‘the realities of today’s world’ .

Photo by Mathias Reding on Unsplash Now the UN Security Council consists of 15 member states - 5 permanent and 10 non-permanent, elected by the UN General Assembly on a geographical basis for two years. The permanent members of the UN Security Council are China, Russia, Britain, the United States and France. These are the countries that have the "right of veto". Now, the non-permanent members of the Security Council are Brazil, Japan, Switzerland, Mozambique, Gabon, Malta, Albania, Ecuador, United Arab Emirates and Ghana. To make a decision, the Security Council needs 9 votes out of 15, including the consent of all permanent members.

Over the past year they have tried to remove Russia from the UN Security Council – Ukraine has been very insistent on this. Well, Western countries demanded to “cancel” everything Russian. Against the backdrop of such rhetoric, Russia has refused to pay contributions to the UN.

Earlier it became known that the head of Wagner PMC Yevgeny Prigozhin remains a defendant in the criminal case.
