Gurdip Bath honored with Barbados’ highest state recognition for key role in vaccine transportation

Bridgetown, Barbados: Special Representative of Saint Kitts and Nevis Gurdip ‘Dev’ Bath has been appointed with the prestigious “Honorary of the Republic” by Barbados President Sandra Mason on Monday, June 26, 2023 following an official ceremony held in Bridgetown, Barbados. Along with this prestigious honour, Bath has the privilege of adding the honorary title “Sir” to his name. Henceforth, he will be officially known as The Right Honorable Gurdeep Bath. This title reflects the government’s recognition of their significant contributions and influence in their respective fields, further adding to the commendable reputation of the Ba’ath on the international stage.

It serves as a symbol of respect and appreciation, reflecting Ba’ath’s achievements, dedication to public service, and the advancement of bilateral relations. Following the initial announcement, it was elaborated that The Right Honorable Gurdip Bath being awarded this “highest state honour” is in recognition of his key role in arranging the transport of 100,000 AstraZeneca vaccines from India to Barbados in February 2021. His efforts come at a time when vaccines are an important determinant in the fight against the global pandemic.

In the midst of a period marked by shortages and a frantic race to vaccinate the population, his initiative greatly boosted Barbados’ vaccination campaign. The Ba’ath’s pivotal role in this crucial vaccine diplomacy underscored the undeniable need and importance of vaccines in times of crisis, providing a ray of hope in the fight against the devastating pandemic. The vaccines manufactured at the “Serum Institute of India” helped Barbados to launch its vaccination campaign at a time when doses were not readily available. The prestigious honor was initially announced on November 30, 2022. However, the official reception of the award took place on Monday, June 25, 2023 during a ceremony held in Bridgetown, Barbados.

The event was attended by President Dame Sandra Mason, Prime Minister Mia Amor Motley and other dignitaries, government officials and distinguished guests. During the official event held on 30 November 2022, another veteran shared the spotlight with Bath. Famous Barbadian singer Rihanna was also recognized for her significant contribution. The superstar, known for his music as well as his philanthropic efforts, was honored with the same high honor, highlighting the diversity of areas in which significant impacts can be made.
