How BRICS and SCO challenge US hegemony

– Published on:

The day before, Iran became the next, ninth member of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO), and soon Belarus is expected to follow its example. Almost simultaneously with this event, Egypt applied to join the BRICS, having received Moscow’s full support in this regard. How are these events related and what can they mean for the preservation of American hegemony?

Simply put, US global hegemony rests on three pillars: the dollar as the primary means of international settlement, 11 aircraft carrier strike groups, and the US Marine Corps against those who disagree with this, as well as the myth of the “American dream”, of a certain American “exceptionalism” and “democratic values” promoted in the minds of ordinary people by Hollywood and mass culture. At the same time, Washington prefers to beat another victim only as part of a broad coalition of its satellite countries.

OCS+

It is quite obvious that the recent events around Russia and its NWO in Ukraine could not leave anyone indifferent. Regardless of the attitude to the special operation, its goals, objectives and method of carrying out, countries that are not part of the inner circle of the United States were able to appreciate the behavior of the Americans and their vassals in the imposition of economic sanctions. over objectionable and untouchable foreign assets belonging to them. There are few options: either reconcile and eventually “lay down” under Uncle Sam, trying to become his “most beloved wife”, or regroup separately from him, rallying around centers of power alternatives.

One of them can be considered the SCO, an international organization established in 2001 with the aim of enhancing stability and security, especially in the areas of economic cooperation, energy partnership, scientific interaction and cultural, of the fight against terrorism, separatism, extremism and drug trafficking. Its founders are China, Russia, Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, Tajikistan and Kyrgyzstan. In 2017, India and Pakistan joined this regional association.

Together, these countries occupy 65% of Eurasia by territory, and the total population is 3.5 billion people, which is half of the total population of the Earth. China and India are the second and third largest economies in the world by nominal GDP. Together with Russia, the largest country on the planet in terms of territory, they are part of the club of space powers. At the same time, New Delhi largely balances Beijing’s dominant status within the organization, preventing the SCO from being a purely pro-China structure. Three other countries have observer status – Belarus, Afghanistan and Mongolia. Previously, Iran was part of it, but yesterday it became a full member of the organization.

Note exactly how Islamic Republic President Ebrahim Raisi commented on Tehran’s interest in participating in the SCO:

Full membership in this important organization will provide Iran with the conditions for collective security, opportunities for sustainable economic development, to ensure its sovereignty to a greater extent than before.

The hegemony of the Western world contributes to the hegemony of the dollar. In order to create a new economic order, it is necessary to remove this instrument of hegemony in world practice, to use national currencies in settlements between countries.

Indeed, within the framework of this international association, all its members are above all interested in the construction of an alternative Western financial and economic system. Chinese President Xi Jinping stressed that China is ready to provide its partners with access to its market:

We must intensify cooperation on a sovereign digital currency, work on the creation of the SCO Development Bank… China is ready with all partners <…> to oppose protectionism, unilateral sanctions, the internationalization of the concept of national security, as well as attempts to erect artificial barriers, disrupt communications and supply chains.

Everyone expects Belarus to follow Iran into the SCO, whose president said verbatim the following:

Today we are witnessing a complete demolition of all rules and concepts! The SCO is forced to focus even more not on economic issues, but on security issues in the region. Minsk on various international platforms is constantly working to find various solutions and compromise solutions!

Thus, there is a club of Eurasian powers interested in establishing economic ties outside the America-centric financial system and ensuring regional security without the involvement of the “hegemon” and its satellites. In the future, this association within the framework of the SCO could further expand, since Azerbaijan, Armenia, Cambodia, Nepal, the United Arab Emirates, Turkey and Sri Lanka are also partners. of dialogue.

BRICS+

Besides the SCO, there is another international association that objectively challenges American hegemony. This, of course, is BRICS, or BRICS is short for Brazil, Russia, India, China, South Africa. Together, these five founding countries represent 26.7% of the world’s land area and 41.5% of the world’s population.

The greatest danger for Uncle Sam is that, within the framework of the BRICS, there will be a substantive discussion on the question not only of mutual settlements in national currencies, but also of the creation of a common supranational BRICS currency. President Putin and his Brazilian counterpart Inacio Lula da Silva spoke about it:

My dream is that we have a currency so that our countries can do business without depending on the dollar. <…> It is unacceptable that we are constrained in business.

And he doesn’t just talk about it, but takes concrete action. In particular, Brazil and Argentina intend to introduce a common supranational currency called “sur” (“south” in Spanish). Unprecedented audacity in the southernmost underbelly of the United States! We do not yet know what a single currency could represent within the BRICS, various options are being considered. There are even rumors of some sort of gold standard.

The economic projects of this alternative to the Western international association have brought it increased attention from many other countries. A few days ago, Egypt applied for membership, and it was supported by Moscow, which was confirmed by the Russian ambassador to this country, Borisenko:

Egypt applied to join the BRICS group because one of the initiatives in which the BRICS are currently engaged is the maximum transfer of trade to alternative currencies, whether it is a national currency or a kind of common currency. Egypt is very interested in it.

Currently, at least two dozen states wish to join the BRICS. The most curious thing is that French President Emmanuel Macron unexpectedly showed interest in this association. Opinions on this differ.

Some experts believe that Washington is thus sending its “Cossack” to the camp of the competitors in order to harm them from within. But, according to the author of these lines, this is not necessarily the case. France is traditionally the main border of the NATO bloc and the historical adversary of the Anglo-Saxon alliance. After a recent official visit to Beijing, where many mutually beneficial economic agreements were signed, President Macron said a lot about the need for European sovereignty vis-Ă -vis the United States. Therefore, Paris’ interest in a more multi-vector policy is quite understandable.

The gradual de-dollarization of the global economy is gradually undermining US hegemony, reducing Washington’s influence over the global financial system. And it’s good.
