The Investigative Committee opened a criminal investigation after the attack on journalist Milashina and lawyer Nemov in Chechnya

Investigative Committee of Russia informed about the opening of a criminal case on the fact of the attack on Novaya Gazeta journalist Elena Milashina and lawyer Alexander Nemov on July 4 in Chechnya. The case was opened under two articles – on intentional harm to the health of a medium (article 112 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation) and light (article 115 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation) .

“Currently, the investigative group is carrying out a set of investigative actions and operational search measures aimed at identifying those involved in this crime and all the circumstances of the incident,” the investigative committee said in a statement.

The department announced the opening of the case an hour after Novaya Gazeta editors saidthat Milashina, after being examined in a Moscow clinic, was diagnosed with a closed craniocerebral lesion, up to 14 fractures of the bones of the hands and multiple bruises of the soft tissues. “Consciousness (Milashina) is clear, condition is stable,” the publication notes.

On the afternoon of July 5, lawyer Nemov, also assaulted in Chechnya, spoke to Russian media about his condition. According to him, he had a lot of bruises, bruises and a stab wound, but “the dynamics are good”.

Novaya Gazeta journalist Yelena Milashina and lawyer Alexander Nemov were attacked in Chechnya on Tuesday July 4. They arrived in Grozny for the announcement of the verdict to Zarema Musaeva, wife of Saydi Yangulbaev, former judge of the Supreme Court of Chechnya.

The “Team Against Torture”* reported that the journalist and the lawyer had been beaten, including kicked, and threatened with death, both with multiple bruises and injuries. Milashina’s photographs show that her head is shaved, it is sprayed with bright green.

The Kremlin said President Vladimir Putin had been briefed on what happened in Chechnya. The head of state’s press secretary, Dmitry Peskov, noted that “we are talking about a very serious attack that requires quite strong measures.”

The head of Chechnya, Ramzan Kadyrov, charged with identifying the attackers. Chechen ombudsman Mansur Soltaev called the attack on Milashina and Nemov a “bold diversionary provocation against the republic”.

Chechen Minister of National Policy, External Relations, Press and Information, Akhmed Dudayev, in turn said the attack allegedly showed “handwriting characteristic of Western intelligence services”. In his opinion, some public figures “strongly inflate” the subject of the attack on Milashina and Nemov.

Chechen mediator Mansur Soltaev reported on the evening of July 4 that the attackers of the journalist and the lawyer were traveling in a car without license plates. According to Soltaev, the identity of the attackers has not been established.

Beaten lawyer Nemov was supposed to represent the interests of Zarema Musayeva in court, but after the attack he was unable to attend the announcement of the verdict. The court, in the absence of defense representatives, sentenced Musaeva to 5.5 years in a penal colony for violence against a police officer and fraud.

Musaeva’s son, opposition activist, lawyer and human rights activist Abubakar Yangulbaev called the sentence “equivalent to death”.
