Ethiopia and China Bolster Ties Through Mutual Cooperation for Development

Beijing, Chine (TEH) – On July 21, Wang Yi, a member of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China Central Committee and director of the Office of the Foreign Affairs Commission of the CPC Central Committee, visited Ethiopia before attending the BRICS High Representatives’ Meeting on Security Affairs in South Africa. During his visit, Wang Yi met with the Prime Minister of Ethiopia, Abiy Ahmed, and discussed the close friendship between the two nations and the potential for further cooperation in various fields.

Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed praised China’s remarkable achievements in the realm of socialism with Chinese characteristics, highlighting its steadfast commitment to a development path tailored to its national conditions. China’s success in this regard has become an inspiring model for developing countries, including Ethiopia. Abiy Ahmed expressed heartfelt appreciation for China’s unwavering support and emphasized that China is a reliable and great friend to Ethiopia.

Moreover, the Prime Minister conveyed Ethiopia’s eagerness to learn from China’s rich development philosophy and experiences, particularly in promoting green and sustainable development. Ethiopia aspires to achieve agricultural self-sufficiency and rapid economic growth in alignment with the success China has accomplished on its own developmental journey.

In addition to strengthening bilateral relations, Ethiopia reaffirmed its commitment to the one-China principle, supporting China’s stance on international affairs. The country also actively participates in the joint construction of the “Belt and Road” initiative, emphasizing the desire for mutually beneficial cooperation with China across various sectors.

In response, Wang Yi acknowledged the significance of Ethiopia as a major African nation with considerable influence. He reiterated China’s commitment to the longstanding friendship between the two countries and expressed China’s firm support for Ethiopia’s domestic reconstruction and economic restoration efforts.

Furthermore, China pledged its readiness to assist Ethiopia in accelerating industrialization, achieving agricultural modernization, and pursuing green and low-carbon development. The meeting highlighted the importance of China-Africa cooperation within the broader context of South-South cooperation, emphasizing the spirit of mutual support and assistance among friends.

Wang Yi underscored China’s willingness to collaborate with African countries, including Ethiopia, in key areas such as trade and investment, green development, digital economy, and health. By doing so, both nations aim to unlock new prospects for China-Africa cooperation and further strengthen their relationship.

This meeting between Wang Yi and Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed solidifies the enduring friendship between China and Ethiopia and sets the stage for increased cooperation that aligns with their shared vision for sustainable development and progress.
