New Delhi, India (TEH) – The Monsoon session of Parliament experienced a heated exchange over the ongoing situation in Manipur. About 300 leaders of India convened under Mahatma Gandhi’s statue on Monday, amplifying the call for Prime Minister Narendra Modi to address the House about the issue. Amidst the contentious exchanges, both the Lok Sabha Speaker, Om Birla, and the Rajya Sabha Chairman, Jagdeep Dhankhar, have urged the opposition to maintain decorum.
Mallikarjun Kharge, the Congress President and Leader of Opposition in the Rajya Sabha, pleaded with the Speakers of both Houses to persuade PM Modi to clarify the Manipur situation in Parliament. “The PM does not even frequent the chambers of Parliament,” Kharge lamented. “He remains ensconced in his office, merely listening to the discussions.”
“We can discuss an issue for an hour or the entire day under Rule 267, but they seem reluctant,” Kharge voiced his frustration. He further warned that this impasse would not be resolved through silence, questioning the government’s reticence to address the matters in Parliament before the public they represent.
While this was unfolding, the Bharatiya Janata Party staged a demonstration against the Congress-led Rajasthan government within the Parliament. MP Sudhanshu Trivedi criticized the opposition’s silence on the allegations of crimes against women in Rajasthan and West Bengal. “What’s even more disheartening is that the Chief Minister of Rajasthan turns a deaf ear to his own minister,” he said.
In a separate incident in the Rajya Sabha, Chairman Jagdeep Dhankhar reprimanded TMC MP Derek O’Brien, exclaiming, “Derek O’Brien ji, please sit down, you are challenging the chair.” Meanwhile, in the Lok Sabha, Speaker Om Birla urged the members to maintain calm and asserted that the House was ready for discussions. “The people have not elected you to create cacophony,” he remarked, asking the members to retain order in the House.
The opposing sides remain at odds, leaving the future of the Monsoon Session of Parliament under uncertainty. The call for PM Modi’s direct address on the Manipur situation is gaining momentum and may shape the discourse of the session in the coming days.
