US warns North Korea against nuclear attacks

Washington, DC – A new advisory group, comprising representatives from the defense, intelligence, and foreign affairs departments of the United States and South Korea, commenced operations in Washington on Friday. This second US-South Korean advisory group is dedicated to exchanging information and planning actions in the event of a conflict with North Korea.

A joint statement released by the United States and South Korea on Saturday emphasized the continued efforts to contain North Korean threats. The United States affirmed its commitment to “contain North Korea by drawing on the full range of American capabilities, including nuclear capabilities”. This strong stance is part of a broader strategy to address the growing concerns over North Korea’s military capabilities.

The joint statement was unequivocal about the consequences of any North Korean aggression. It stated that any North Korean nuclear attack on the United States or its allies is “unacceptable and will lead to the end of the Kim regime” Furthermore, it was clearly articulated that a nuclear attack on South Korea “will be met with a swift, powerful and decisive response”.

The urgency of these discussions is underscored by recent developments in North Korea’s ballistic missile program. Pyongyang has developed and tested a range of ballistic missiles capable of reaching targets in South Korea, Japan, and even the US mainland. This growing capability presents a direct threat to regional and international security.

South Korea’s Deputy National Security Adviser Kim Tae-hyo raised concerns on Friday, indicating that North Korea may test launch an intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM) this month. The significance of such a missile test cannot be understated, as it poses a direct nuclear threat regardless of its range, given its capability to carry a nuclear warhead.

The formation of this advisory group and the strong statements from both the United States and South Korea reflect a heightened level of concern and a commitment to a robust, coordinated response to the North Korean threat. The group’s work is crucial in shaping the strategic approach of both nations in ensuring stability and security in the face of growing tensions on the Korean Peninsula.
