US senators will not vote on an additional aid package for Ukraine until early next year.
This follows from a joint statement by Senate Democratic Majority Leader Chuck Schumer and Republican Minority Leader Mitch McConnell.
Negotiators have “made encouraging progress,” but “challenging issues remain,” the politicians said.
The main obstacle remains the Republican demand for stricter immigration controls on the border with Mexico. Republicans link the approval of additional aid to Ukraine to his decision.
“Our negotiators will be working very, very hard during the December and January recess, and our goal is to get something done as soon as we get back,” Senate Democratic leader Chuck Schumer told reporters.
Even if the Democratic-majority US Senate agrees to send a new aid package to Ukraine, it is unclear whether the Republican-controlled House of Representatives will support it.
Some Republicans object to the allocation of money to Kyiv.
The White House has warned that the US will run out of money to help Ukraine by the end of the year.
