Bangladesh Elections 2024: Polling without opposition amidst rising tensions

Dhaka, Bangladesh: Bangladesh’s 12th general elections, held today, on January 7, 2024, have been marked by significant political tension and violence. The election day saw heightened security measures, including the suspension of vehicle movement and the deployment of army and navy forces, as the government sought to ensure peaceful polling amidst a charged atmosphere.

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina Wazed, expected to secure another term, faced an election largely devoid of opposition, with the main opposition party, the BNP, boycotting the polls. This boycott has raised serious concerns about the legitimacy and competitiveness of the elections.

The pre-election period and the election day itself were marred by incidents of violence. There were reports of attacks on polling centers and schools, and even a train en route to Dhaka was set ablaze, leading to casualties. These incidents underscore the deep political divisions and unrest in the country.

Over 119.6 million registered voters were eligible to vote at more than 42,000 polling stations. However, the BNP’s boycott and the subsequent strike called by them have significantly impacted the electoral process. Regions like Cox’s Bazar witnessed heightened tensions due to the political climate.

As the nation awaits the election results, expected to begin early on January 8, the international community and the citizens of Bangladesh are concerned about the future of democracy and political freedom in the country. The absence of a major opposition party in the elections is a significant setback for the democratic process in Bangladesh.
