Moscow, Russia – Alexey Navalny died in correctional colony No. 3 in the Yamalo-Nenets Autonomous Okrug, the regional department of the Federal Penitentiary Service reports.
“On February 16, 2024, in correctional colony No. 3, convict Alexei Navalny felt unwell after a walk, almost immediately losing consciousness. Medical workers from the institution immediately arrived and an emergency medical team was called,” the department said in a statement.
It is noted that they tried to resuscitate Navalny, but failed. Ambulance doctors pronounced him dead.
According to an RT source, a blood clot broke loose.
Alexey Navalny was serving his sentence in a settlement, where he ended up after replacing his suspended sentence with a real one in the case of embezzling funds from the Yves Rocher company in February 2021.
In March last year, the Lefortovo District Court of Moscow sentenced him, together with the previous case, to nine years in a maximum security prison for fraud and contempt of court.
Radio Sputnik previously reported that the Russian Ministry of Justice included Navalny’s associates in the register of foreign agents.
