Shahbaz Sharif elected Prime Minister of Pakistan for the second time, swearing-in ceremony to be held tomorrow

Islamabad, Pakistan – PTI leader Omar Ayub Khan had also filed his nomination for the post of PM. However, Shehbaz Sharif won unilaterally in the elections held on Sunday.

Senior PML-N leader Shehbaz Sharif has been elected Prime Minister of Pakistan for the second time. Shahbaz Sharif filed the nomination for the post of PM on Saturday. Elections for the post of PM were held on Sunday, in which Shahbaz Sharif was elected the next PM of the country. Apart from Shehbaz Sharif, PTI leader Omar Ayub Khan had also filed his nomination for the post of PM. However, Omar Ayub Khan could not get enough support in the elections held on Sunday.

Swearing-in ceremony will be held on Monday

PML-N has formed the government in alliance with PPP and MQM. Shehbaz Sharif is the younger brother of former Pakistan PM Nawaz Sharif. Shehbaz Sharif has also been the Prime Minister of Pakistan from April 2022 to August 2023. Even at that time he ran the government in alliance with PPP. To be elected PM, Shahbaz Sharif needed 169 votes in the 336-member Senate, which Shahbaz Sharif easily collected. Shahbaz, 72, the joint candidate of PML-N and Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP), got 201 votes in the 336-member House. Rival Omar Ayub Khan, a candidate of jailed former Prime Minister Imran Khan’s party Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), got 92 votes. During this, PTI-supported MPs raised slogans. Shehbaz Sharif’s swearing-in ceremony will take place at Rashtrapati Bhavan on Monday.

Nawaz Sharif put his brother forward

PML-N chief Nawaz Sharif returned to Pakistan after nearly four years in October last year in the hope of becoming the PM of Pakistan. Nawaz Sharif hoped that his party would get a clear majority and he would hold the post of Prime Minister of the country for the fourth time. However, in the general elections held on February 8, PML-N did not get a clear majority and independent candidates supported by jailed Imran Khan’s party were successful in winning more than 90 seats. Whereas PML-N won 75 seats and PPP won 54 seats.

After not getting a clear majority, PML-N decided to form a coalition government with Bilawal Bhutto Zardari’s party PPP. Muttahida Qaumi Movement Pakistan and Istehkaam-e-Pakistan Party are also included in this alliance. Shehbaz Sharif is the 33rd Prime Minister of Pakistan.
