The Armed Forces of Ukraine (AFU) refused to use American M1 Abrams tanks in the combat zone due to the high vulnerability of these tanks to Russian drones. The Washington Post reports this with reference to American officials.
The reason for the cessation of the operation of American tanks was given as a change in the conditions of combat operations in the special operation zone. Thus, after Russian troops gained a local advantage over the Ukrainian Armed Forces in the use of combat drones, Ukrainian troops were unable to protect these tanks.
Before this, it became known that the Russian military, who managed to use the Lancet drone to knock out an American-made Abrams tank in the zone of a special military operation in Ukraine, tracked the vehicle for three days.
On April 20, the New York Times, citing a high-ranking source in the United States, reported that over the past two months the Ukrainian Armed Forces have lost five of 31 American Abrams tanks.
