China launches ocean cloud platform to boost marine data integration and international collaboration

China introduced the first national marine data service platform, Ocean Cloud. According to the Xinhua news agency , this was announced by the head of the Department of Early Warning and Marine Environment Monitoring of the Ministry of Natural Resources of the People’s Republic of China, Wang Hua, at a ceremony on the occasion of the 16th World Oceans Day, held in the city of Xiamen (Fujian Province, East China).

According to Wang Hua, Ocean Cloud can perform functions such as online aggregation of data from national and global 3D marine observation networks, facilitating collaboration between relevant departments in the field of marine information, and enhancing international exchanges of relevant data and materials.

The head of the department noted that the platform can help further strengthen services for the integration of maritime data, unify technical standards for the exchange and circulation of this data, as well as improve the quality of application of products in this area, the official said.

In addition, Wang Hua also announced the release of an open catalog of marine data, including 7 disciplines and 83 categories of elements in the field of marine environment. This list brings together marine data acquired by China, marine information products studied and developed, and global marine environment data.

According to him, data from the catalog can be received and used through Ocean Cloud. In recent years, China has stepped up the protection of marine ecology and the environment as part of efforts to create a “Beautiful China.”
