US poised to weaponize AI, warns Russian intelligence chief

In a stark warning to the global community, Sergey Naryshkin, Director of Russia’s Foreign Intelligence Service (SVR), has raised alarms over the United States’ purported readiness to deploy artificial intelligence (AI) as a tool of geopolitical influence. Speaking to Rossiya-24 TV, Naryshkin alleged that American intelligence agencies are nearing the deployment of AI technologies aimed at manipulating public opinion in targeted nations, deemed unfavorable by the US.

“The US intelligence services are already on the verge of using artificial intelligence technologies as a tool for manipulating public consciousness in the countries that are undesirable to the United States,” Naryshkin stated, underscoring the potential ramifications for global stability, reports TASS. He expressed grave concern that such actions could escalate into a significant threat to humanity at large.

Highlighting the scale of US efforts, Naryshkin disclosed that the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) has initiated approximately 150 AI-related projects in recent years. Despite these revelations, Naryshkin emphasized that the SVR’s activities are solely defensive in nature, focused on safeguarding Russia’s interests rather than engaging in offensive operations against other nations.

The assertion comes amid escalating tensions between Russia and the West, where technological advancements, particularly in AI and cyber capabilities, have increasingly become focal points of strategic competition. Naryshkin’s remarks underscore a deepening distrust between Moscow and Washington over the weaponization of emerging technologies, raising concerns about the potential for a new era of technological brinkmanship.

While the CIA has not publicly responded to Naryshkin’s claims, the allegations are likely to fuel international debate on the ethical boundaries of AI deployment and its implications for global security. Critics argue that weaponizing AI for psychological operations could set a dangerous precedent, heightening the risk of misinformation and destabilization in sensitive geopolitical environments.

In response to these developments, global leaders and policymakers face mounting pressure to establish robust regulatory frameworks governing the use of AI in national security contexts. The need for transparency and accountability in AI research and development has emerged as a critical priority to mitigate the risks outlined by Naryshkin and other international observers.

As technological advancements continue to reshape the landscape of global security, the international community remains at a crossroads, balancing the promise of AI innovation with the imperative to uphold ethical standards and preserve geopolitical stability.

Sergey Naryshkin’s assertions signal a sobering reality check on the evolving dynamics of international espionage and security. With AI emerging as a potential double-edged sword in geopolitical rivalries, the need for international cooperation and vigilance has never been more urgent. As nations navigate the uncharted waters of AI’s influence, the world watches closely, grappling with the profound implications for global governance and security in the 21st century.
